Lead-Acid Battery, Its Components, and Usage.

If you have a car, then much better if you would choose to pause for a while and read this information regarding this type of battery which is mostly used in vehicles.

A lead-acid battery was invented by the French physician Gaston Planté in 1859. This might be an old invention but it still widely-used until now. It is also the first rechargeable battery among all of the batteries. A few of the reasons why it is still in use today because it is inexpensive, reliable, tolerant to overcharging, can be recycled and has many sizes and capacities available worldwide.

Components of Lead-acid Battery.

A lead-acid battery is composed of lead dioxide, a sponge metallic lead, lead sulfate, and sulphuric acid solution electrolyte.

Lead Dioxide (PbO2) – is an oxidizing agent used in the manufacture of dyes, matches, and rubber substitutes. It forms the positive active material.

Sponge Metallic Lead – a metallic lead brought to a spongy form by reduction of lead salts, or by compressing finely divided lead. It forms the negative active material.

Lead Sulfate (PbSO4) – is a white solid, which appears white in microcrystalline form. It is synthesized by adding Sulfuric acid to a lead salt solution. It is slightly soluble in hot water but insoluble in alcohol.

Sulfuric Acid – a strong acid made by oxidizing solutions of sulfur dioxide. It is used as an electrolyte.

On the discharging process, the lead dioxide (positive material/plate) and lead (negative material/plate) react with the electrolyte of sulfuric acid to create lead sulfate, water, and energy.

Since it is made of lead-acid, it can deliver bulk power. Now, many manufacturers enhance the performance of this battery and added some elements to it like calcium, antimony, and selenium.

The container of a lead-acid battery can be made of glass, hard rubber, ceramic materials, or molded plastics.

Where Does a Lead-acid Battery use in?

It is mostly used in vehicles such as automobiles, forklifts, dump trucks, golf cars, ambulances, and even uninterruptible power supplies used in computers.

Imagine without these vehicles in businesses, it absolutely affects progress and development. That is how really useful a lead-acid battery in the automotive industry and any sections of technology.
