It is very important to use your power bank properly. While the new USB-C standard is now automatic, meaning it will automatically select the correct voltage for your device, there are a few devices out there that still use traditional set power voltages. Even our newest power banks still support legacy manual voltage selection. For ‘legacy’ devices it is important that you select the proper voltage for your device.
Here are the 5 tips for you to increase your power bank’s life and efficiency.
- Use high-quality cables.
Use high-quality cables instead of using poor-quality ones and try to avoid using long cables. Using long and poor-quality cables will waste a lot of current and eventually wears out the power bank quicker.
- Always keep the power bank in a cool place.
Most of the electronic devices are very sensitive to heat, not just the power bank only. It doesn’t mean that you should keep your power bank in a refrigerator or an ice bucket. It just means that you should keep your power bank at the right temperature which is not directly exposed to heat such as sunlight, kitchen stoves, etc.
It is recommended to use and store the power bank at a temperature of between 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Avoid dropping your power bank frequently.
Most of the power banks contain fragile components and a circuit board inside. They might be damaged every time you drop them. Consider keeping it in a soft case.
- Keep the power bank at a 40% charge when stowing away.
Do not discharge the power bank below 40 to 50% for long periods and do not deplete it every time you use it. If you keep depleting the battery, it will shorten its life span. Most people don’t know it, but Tesla’s electric cars are managed this way. It is never fully depleted, and never fully charged (unless you tell it too). When the battery shows depleted, the Tesla car actually still have more power left! Conversely, it is not always fully charged! And when the battery starts wearing out, Tesla automatically shifts the charge range meaning it’ll automatically charge to higher capacity, and allow for further depletion.
- Do not charge your power bank and your device (phone, tablet, etc.) at the same time.
While we actually do this ourselves (we use our power banks as mini UPS for our devices) it’s not recommended as that means the power is constantly moving thru the cells which will cause extra wear and tear.
