Hello,
Recently our 2018 Macbook Pro started to bulge. The trackpad would not work, and I could not close the lid. “No problem,” I said to myself as I proceed to google for the Apple Battery replacement program… It didn’t take long after entering my serial number that my Macbook Pro touch bar was not covered. “What?!” this is basically a new computer!
Well, I needed a new battery. So after getting the battery, I proceeded to google the best way to replace the battery. “What?!!!” again! I another ‘shock’ I’ve come to realize. I must remove the whole motherboard to replace the battery!!!?. This can’t be true I thought. I’ve replace plenty of batteries before and they were pretty straightforward! Why Apple? why?
I tried for far too long looking for a way to avoid removing a whole motherboard. I re-tried Google. Nothing. I tried Youtube. Nothing!
Ok, So after reviewing tons of videos and pictures online I decided that you really don’t need to remove the motherboard.
But before I proceed. Heed this warning. Your results may vary. You may damage your Macbook, you may break something. This is only for the more advanced users. This is not for the novice. Have I covered it all? If not, Do NOT DO it! This is only for your entertainment purposes. We take no responsibility...
Ok. Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, here’s how I did it. I will skip some disassembly pictures as thats found all over the web. I’ll just jump into the actual removing of the battery.
After removing the insulating sticker, removing the battery board data cable connector, 3.7mm pancake screw securing the battery power connector, two 1.9mm screws securing the cover bracket for the keyboard/trackpad, trackpad cable, and finally removing the glued battery cells from the case…
Remove the cellophane, stickying tape, etc and stick the battery back on to the case. Re-assemble everything in reverse order!
That was easy! See no need to remove the motherboard!
