For years I’ve been fighting with my UPS. No matter what UPS brand, my Mac Pro will not restart on its own after a graceful shutdown.

That is until I solved it once and for all!

I’ve tried modifying scripts, and in my case, I have Cyberpower UPS backup software called PowerPanel. Inside the app, there is a script called shutdown.sh. In it, there is a shutdown command called “Shutdown -h now”. I’ve modified that to “shutdown -hu now” which basically tells it to prepare to restart the Mac when the power has been restored. That works to a certain extent but every single time I do a software update, I wipe out that script, and on top of that, it does not always consistently restart the Mac. Don’t ask me why it’s not consistent, but coming back to the office with the Mac OFF was NOT acceptable!

The other thing I found was a software called Power Manager, I configured it so that it’ll turn itself ON every hour. So that means if the Mac is off, it’ll turn itself back on. Problem solved right? NOPE!

Can anyone see the problem with this?

Here’s the problem. Let’s say your Mac was just gracefully shut down because of a power failure. But because most UPS turns itself off then turns on after 2 minutes to trigger the Mac turn on. This never happens. That means, if the power failure happens right at the scheduled time the Power Manager tells it to turn on, that will tell the computer to go to shutdown, then immediately restart. While restarting, the UPS pulls the power while booting! That is a no-no!

This has been bugging me for years, and I’ve finally solved it!
