Batteries are very useful in almost everything. They are useful for different valuable devices, vehicles, or apparatus at schools, hotels, hospitals, streets, underwater, laboratories, and even in the International Space Station. Batteries help your devices to be portable and easy to carry everywhere you go like your watches, mobile phones, cameras, toys, portable blood testing equipment, and a lot more.
There are two types of batteries, primary batteries/cells, and secondary batteries/cells. The primary batteries are non-rechargeable, cheap, and have a longer life. They are mostly made to power small household appliances such as clocks, radios, flashlights, and a lot more. While the secondary batteries are more expensive but can be charged again and again.
To start this series, let us first talk about the Alkaline battery, its components, and usage.
Components of Alkaline Battery.
An Alkaline battery is an example of a primary battery/cell. It consists of a zinc anode, KOH (in paste form) electrolyte, and y-MnO2 cathode. The negative electrode is zinc and the positive electrode is manganese dioxide (MnO2).
Even though an alkaline battery is an example of a primary battery, many manufacturers designed this type of battery to become rechargeable and called a rechargeable alkaline battery.
Sizes of Alkaline Batteries and Their Usage.
Alkaline batteries have different sizes designed for various devices as well. Some of the most used ones are the following.
- AA Battery – also known as “double A.” It is the most widely used alkaline battery nowadays. It is suited for the high-drain application. It measures 1.5V and works well for devices like clocks, cordless phones, remote control, etc.
- AAA Battery – also known as “triple A.” It is the second most widely used battery. It can be used for small toys, calculators, thermometers, etc. It is also measured at 1.5V like an AA battery but generates less energy due to its smaller size. It is designed for small devices that don’t require a lot of energy.
- AAAA Battery – also known as “Quadruple A.” It is also often used in small devices such as laser pointers, hearing aid remote controls, glucose meters, etc.
- C Battery – this is a heavy-duty type of battery. It is used for toys, radios, flashlights, and even in restrooms that used batteries for powered flush sensors.
- D Battery – This bulky battery can be used for large or heavy-duty devices such as large flashlights, stereos, soap dispensers, etc.
- 9 V Battery – it is known for its rectangular shape and durability. This is designed for devices that require high voltage and lots of power. It can work in extreme temperatures from 0-130 degrees Fahrenheit like in the kitchen equipment or walk-in coolers.
