How Does A Coal Power Plant Works?

A coal power plant is a type of power plant that produces electricity by burning coal in a boiler to produce steam.

Coal is a combustible dark or black substance that is extracted from the ground and burned as fuel.

This type of power plant is quite different from other power sources like wind energy or solar energy because it needs some complicated processes in order to work.

Lately, the traditional way to unload the coal was by using a crane and picking it up from a train. Nowadays, the newer coal power plants have underground containment which allows the train to drop the coal.

  1. The coal will be unloaded by the train to the mine mouth which is the area where it is placed.
  2. The coal will be pulverized by a very huge grinder to make it into a fine powder. They usually turned it into powder to maximize the heat and to completely burned the coal.
  3. The coal will be burned in a boiler/furnace. The heat will be transferred to pipes that contain high-pressured water that boils to steam.
  4. The steam will create great pressure and will flow into a turbine that makes the generator spin and produces electricity.
  5. The steam is then cooled, condensed back into water, and returned to the boiler to heat it up and to steam again to create pressure that makes the process all over again.

What are the countries that use coal power plants?

There is a lot of countries all over the world that use this type of power source. They are not just small countries but they are the developing ones such as the United States of America, South Africa, China, India, Australia, and Russia to name a few.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the coal power plant.

Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of this type of plant. A few of the advantages are: (1) It increases the quality of life by giving people electricity for their daily needs at home, work, or business. (2) It also gives jobs to the individuals and can give taxes to the government. (3) It is not affected by environmental conditions i.e. Solar only works when there is sun, and windmills only work when there’s wind.

However, a few of the disadvantages are: (1) It emits huge smoke or substances like carbon monoxide, mercury, sulfur dioxide, arsenic, and selenium which are dangerous to the environment and health of the people. (2) It requires mining since it uses coals underground.
